Our Philosophy
A Humanistic Approach to Healing
Our philosophy is rooted in the understanding that healing is not a linear process and cannot be reduced to a single method, diagnosis, or protocol. At NorthStar, we embrace a whole-person, whole-system approach that recognizes the complexity of of what it means to be human.
We believe that every individual has a unique path to achieving mental well-being, and there are no “one-size-fits-all” solutions. Instead, healing emerges from a combination of:
- Deep self-awareness
- Supportive relationships
- Nervous system regulation
- Mind-body integration
- Respect for each person’s lived experience
This philosophy recognizes that people heal in their own time, in their own way. Our role is to walk alongside, not dictate the path, but to implement a trauma-informed approach. We understand how trauma shapes the nervous system, relationships, and one’s worldview. Our goal is to approach all patient interactions with compassion, patience, non-judgment, and respect.
The body holds profound wisdom. Symptoms are not failures, but signals. When we learn to listen to the body with an open mind rather than fear, the door to transormation can open. We support practices that help people reconnect with their internal cues, including somatic awareness, grounding, and gentle exploration of emotional landscapes.
NorthStar Psychiatry steps outside the traditional system which often reduces people to labels or focuses narrowly on symptom elimination. Our philosophy moves beyond that, offering depth-oriented, eclectic therapeutic approaches and provides a wealth of education, experience, and resources to directly target and help problems for patients, treating a broad range of mental health diagnoses. Unlike other practices, we keep up to date and employ more modern and cutting edge treatments, such as neurofeedback, Spravato/Ketamine treatment, TMS, ERP, and ART.
We honor the whole person through deep presence and honest connection. This means offering support while gently challenging you to examine unhelpful patterns, grow through self-reflection, and cultivate authentic interdependence. Healing is about expanding capacity, restoring connection, and cultivating resilience.
At NorthStar, we hold the belief people thrive when they are empowered to make choices that align with their values and inner knowing. We also understand healing does not happen in isolation. Our therapists and providers come from various backgrounds, bringing their own experiences and knowledge to create an authentic and secure space with you, incorporating social justice perspective and relational theory to promote building community.
We are committed to fostering a healing environment, consistently providing care through a multicultural perspective that is inclusive and affirming of all identities and experiences. This includes honoring and respecting diversity and ability status across culture, race, ethnicity, LGBTQIA+ identities, and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities. Our approach is grounded in:
- Cultural humility and responsiveness
- Gender- and neurodiversity-affirming practices
- Accessibility and communication justice for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals
- Consistent education in cultural inclusive practices
We recognize that true healing requires addressing systemic inequities and celebrating the richness of human diversity. Healing is an evolutionary process, and so is our philosophy. We remain committed to ongoing learning, reflection, and adaptation. We draw from emerging research, lived experience, and interdisciplinary wisdom.
